State
A country, which is a political unit and formal region
(EX: China)
Sovereignty
The ability to stand alone politically and economically and be recognized as independent. (EX: Girlboss of countries, U.S.)
Nation
An ethnic group. Nations can exist without states (country)(EX: Jews and Armenians)
Nation state
A state made up of almost one ethnic group or nation (EX: Japan, Iceland)
Multinational State
A state that has many nations that are legally separated in their borders (EX: United Kingdom, Iraq)
Stateless Nation
A nation (ethnic group) without its own official territory. They are often refugees (EX: Palestinians, Basque)
Territoriality
To influence or control people and events by taking control over a geographical area
(EX: Pflugerville claiming the Pfield, NYC “The Big Apple”)
Colonialism
The claiming and dominating of overseas territories (EX: Britain colonizing and controlling the Americas)
Neocolonialism
Stronger countries controlling the economy, politics, and culture of weaker countries, especially their former colonies
(EX: Core countries getting rich from former colonies, like Africa)
Choke point
A narrow, strategic passage way to another place that is difficult to pass (EX: Panama Canal)
Shatter belt
A region where states join and break up because of conflicts and they’re caught between the interests of more powerful outside states (EX:Balkan, Russia, Ukraine)
Self determination
The right of all people to choose their own political status
Antecedent boundary
A border established before many people settle there (EX: The border between Canada and the U.S.)
Subsequent boundary
A border drawn in an area that’s settled in and where cultural landscapes exist. Most common type of boundary. (EX: Many boundaries between neighboring states in Europe)
Consequent boundary
A type of subsequent boundary that takes into account existing cultural landscapes and differing languages and other cultural traits (EX: The borders in former Yugoslavia are based on ethnic regions)
Superimposed boundary
A border drawn over an existing border by an outside force (EX: Berlin conference)
Geometric boundary
A mathematically drawn border, often using latitude and longitude, or using a straight line arc between 2 points (EX: Colorado, Wyoming, Utah)
Relic boundary
A former boundary that no longer has an official use
United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS)
Established state’s rights and responsibilities in international waters
Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ)
Coastal states can explore, extract minerals, and manage up to 200 nautical miles (230 miles)
Imperialism
The push to create an empire by exercising force or influence to control other nations or people (EX: Spain taking control of Mexico)
