What is sports development?
- it’s the marketing and the publisising f sports activities for the community.
what are all the aspects of sports development?
- raising awareness of individual sport

what is the purpose of sports development?
- increasing participation
- progressing talent
- promoting values
What is the purpose of sports development in increasing participation? (Plus, examples)
- they aim to get particular groups active e.g. women
- they aim to increase the physical activity levels across the nation
- promoting participation in a particular sport
- they work with schools and the local communities
Examples: - Sports England running “This Girl Can” campaign for women
- England Netball running an over 40s squad
- walking football for older people
What is the purpose of sports development in progressing talent? (Plus, examples)
- they aim to improve the quality of grass-roots sport to promote talent development
- providing better coaches and officials
- aiming to improve UK performance in the Olympics and Paralympics
- they aim to improve talent through identification pathways
Examples: - the FA spending the funding on developing its talent development model
- Leeds city council using funding to build a new 4g pitch in the Leeds city center.
- EBC running courses on how to become a cricket coach or umpire
what is the purpose of sports development in promoting values?
- Fair play = promoting adherence to rules and discipline
- Teamwork = working with other people to achieve something
- Respect = similar to fair play, acknowledge humanity and rights
- Tolerance = accepting different views, feelings and attitudes of others
- Inclusion = including people from a wide range of backgrounds, ages and abilities
- Citizenship = promoting moral behaviors amongst the community
what is a continuum?
- a continuous program that you can progress along
What are the four stages in order of the sports development continuum?
- Foundation
- Participation
- Performance
- Excellence
What is the foundation stage for? (Coaching style and moving on)
- it’s for developing basic skills such as running, jumping, catching, throwing and hitting
- it’s fun and enjoyable
- being taught PE in school
- it’s for beginners
Coaching style: - visual guidance and demonstrations
- lots of praise and positive encouragement
Moving on:
Looking at joining a local club or team, or joining in with school extracurricular activities
What is the participation stage for? (Coaching style and moving on)
- playing sport for a local club or team or as part of school extracurricular teams
- participating as a hobby or for fun, fitness or social reason
- taking part in more structured activities within their own time
- starting to develop some skills and knowledge of the rules and regulations of the sport
Coaching style: - verbal guidance as the performer now understands more about the sport
- sport specific drills to improve skills
Moving on:
Performer may be scouted or attend a trail to represent an academy or a reginal, county or district team.
What is the performance stage for? (Support needed and moving on)
- playing sport at county, regional or academy level
- performers are highly motivated
- performers have access to good level coaching and facilities
Support needed: - parental support and financial support to pay for competitions, equipment and travel etc.
Moving on:
May be enrolled on a Talent ID program, scouted for better teams, move up the academy into the first team
What is the excellence stage for? (Coaching style and support needed)
- performers have high levels of experience and knowledge
- performers have very high skill levels
- they are professionals and are playing for a living or to earn money
- performers are participating in highly organised competitions and events
Coaching style: - high quality coaching and facilities needed such as video analysis, specialist psychologists and fitness coaches
Support needed: - NGB sponsors, high quality facilities, coaching, have access to sport science support, financial support (funding or sponsorship)
What do Sport England do? (Target groups)
- They run an Active Lives Survey to collect lots of data so that they can increase participation.
Target Groups: - women
- low socio-economic groups
- age (55+, children, young adults 16-24)
- disabilities and long-term health conditions
- ethnicity (Ethnic minorities)
What are the health benefits of physical activity?
- reduces body fat and chances of obesity
- promotes positive mental health
- promotes healthy body systems such as cardiovascular and respiratory systems
- reduces chance of illness
- helps you live longer
