A

Involves the coordination of all activities relating to the acquiring, developing, maintaining and terminating employees. It is the effective management of employee and employer relationship.
This is important to make sure all employees are the right person for the job and that they are trained for the particular roll.

Work-life balance

A

Balancing work with personal life. Recognising that employees come with responsibilities outside their working life including family, other commitments and interests.
LSOs should strive to provide flexibility in the conditions of employment to enable employees to achieve a combination of work and life balance.
This allows employees to reduce stress improving productivity, attendance, corporate culture, motivation and staff turnover.

Occupational health & safety

A

Responsibility the employer has to ensure the workplace is safe for employees and that steps are taken to minimise harm. Aims to protect workers against harm to their health, safety and welfare. OH&S includes appropriate training and encourages improvements.

Job security

A

The belief that the employee will not lose their job. It is important for employees to feel some stability in the employment relationship to motivate staff. If job security is not present motivation of staff is decreased and employees become stressed, decreasing staff productivity.

Maslow theory

A

Representation of human needs in a hierarchy. Where an employee sits on a hierarchy is determined by what needs have been substantially satisfied.
Self-actualisation needs- challenging work allowing growth and development
Self-esteem needs- recognition and attention including job titles
Social needs- friendly work associates and supportive management
Safety needs- protection from visual and emotional harm
Physiological needs- basic needs, a job and getting paid

Hertzberg theory

A

A belief that motivation is linked to intrinsic/ external factors related to work itself rather than the hygiene factors that relate to the conditions of work. Hygiene factors only motivate employees short term, for long term motivation the motivational factories must be present.
Hygiene factors- supervision, low pay, poor working conditions, lack of job security, polices and procedures
Motivation factors- achievement/ advancement, personal development, stimulating work, recognition/ responsibility

Lockes theory

A

A goal based theory where employees are motivated to achieve objectives they helped to set. Goals must be clear, specific and challenging but not impossible to loss motivation. Appropriate feedback regarding their achievement and recognition is an important part. Employees must be committed to meeting the challenges. Although the theory is time consuming the goals motivate employees improving overall performance.

Motivation

A

Motivation is the commitment and effect employees have and are required to have when working in an organisation. Motivation of employees can decrease leave and increase productivity, positivity affecting the LSO. Employee expectations and motivation theories increase the motivation of employees.

A

Where the motivation occurs in the work itself because it is interesting, highly valued and the workers enjoy doing the task associated with it.
