Unit 4 - Cells Vocab Flashcards
(31 cards)
Cell
The basic unit of life
Unicellular
Made of only one cell
Multicellular
Made of many cells
Prokaryotic Cells
Simple organisms without a nucleus
Eukaryotic cells
Cells that contain a nucleus and membrane bound organelles
Membrane bound
Organelle is surrounded by/contained in a membrane
Autotroph
An organism that has the ability to make its own food
Heterotroph
An organism that must obtain its food from another source
Total magnification
The total calculation of zoom on a microscope (ocular x objective)
Ocular lens
The eyepiece on a microscope, has a power of 10x magnification
Objective Lens
The rotating power objective lens on a microscope (4x, 10x, 40x)
Organelle
A tiny part of a cell that carries out a specific function
Ribosomes
An organelle that synthesizes proteins
Cytoplasm
Jelly-like substance that fills the cell and protects the organelles; site of cellular respiration
Cell membrane
Boundary that surrounds all cells and determines what enters and exits
DNA/RNA
Nucleic acids that contain directions for making proteins and are found in the nucleus
Nucleus
Helps control cell activities and is known as the brain
Mitochondria
Produces energy for cells, site of cellular respiration
Vacuole
Membrane-bound sac that stores food, water, and waste (larger in plant cells)
Lysosome
Enzyme containing organelle that breaks down old cell parts
Centrioles
An organelle found in animal cells that contains spindle fibers for cellular reproduction
Cell Wall
Rigid structure made of cellulose used to support and protect plants and prokaryotic cells
Chloroplast
Produces food for plant cells; the site of photosynthesis
Cellulose
A polysaccharide that plants use to build cell walls for support
