Unit 4: Homeostasis Flashcards
Define: Homeostasis
The maintenance of conditions within a cell or body within acceptable limits
What are regulators?
Organisms that require a very constant internal environment, not allowing our conditions to vary too much.
What are conformers?
Organisms that allow their internal environment to vary more based on the environment.
What is contact signalling?
Cells that need one-to-one contact to communicate (local one-to-one)
What is paracrine signalling?
One cell secretes a chemical (called the secreting chemical) that goes to many different target cells locally (local one-to-many)
What is synaptic signalling?
Far away signalling between one cell and another. Ex: neurons (Remote one-to-one)
What is endocrine signalling?
Where one cell send many different items (ex. Hormones) to many cells from a distance (remote one-to-many)
What are the steps (in order) of the mechanism of communication between cells?
Stimulus - Receptor - Processor - Effector - Response (repeat)
