Unit 4 Lesson 10 Format and Style Flashcards
What does formatting mean
the way in which a piece of writing is organized or presented
What are some examples of formatting
Formatting can include graphics and multimedia or changes to font size
What effect does formating have
These formatting changes can make it easier for readers to understand what the writer is talking about, and in some cases can effectively present information that is either difficult or impossible to express as easily in words.
What are headings calssifed as
a type of formatting
What does heading mean
a word or short phrase that introduces a new section of a text/ A heading is a word or phrase that serves as the title for a section of a piece of explanatory writing.
What do headings help readers see
One type of formatting is the use of headings to help readers see transitions from one topic to another .
What is the benfit of having headings
When one section ends, readers can identify the new topic quickly and easily just by reading the heading for the next section.
Sometimes topics can be long and detailed, and in these cases writers may…
may divide each topic into smaller sections, sometimes called subtopics.
What is a subheading
a heading given to a subsection of a text
How does the use of subheadings benfit the reader
Like headings, subheadings help guide the audience by informing readers of what is to come next and by serving as a reminder of what various sections of the text are about.
What is the difference between a heading and a subheading?
A heading is used to show the beginning of a large topic within the piece of writing. A subheading is used to show the beginning of a small subsection of a piece of writing. Also, headings usually appear in a larger font size than subheadings.
What are graphics
Graphics are visual images such as maps, tables, and diagrams, which are also known as figures.
What is a figure
a diagram
What is one major reason writers insert graphics into their work
One of the major reasons why writers insert graphics into their work is because some information can be difficult to express in words. This figure replaces some of the text, and for most readers it will be easier to understand than a long and complicated paragraph.
what is another way graphcs are used
Graphics can also simply illustrate what’s already been said in the text. These graphics provide another way for the reader to get the information and another way for the writer to make sure the reader understands. Sometimes it’s helpful for readers to see the information in different ways, once using a table or graph and once in text.
What is multimedia
information that is conveyed in multiple ways, such as through video, audio, or images
What are the benfits of mulitmedia
Adding multimedia components to a piece of writing is another way to ensure that readers understand what the writer is trying to say. In each case, multimedia components can add to a reader’s understanding—and enjoyment—of a text.
Why would a writer choose to include multimedia in a text?
The addition of multimedia features can make it easier for a reader to understand the writer’s points. Multimedia can also make the text more interactive for readers.
What is domain-specfic vocabulary
language used within a particular area of knowledge
What are the benfits of using presice language and domain-specfic vocabulary
Skillful writers use precise language and domain-specific vocabulary, language used within a particular area of knowledge, to help readers understand complex ideas.
What does precise langauge do
Precise language enables writers to present concrete details and specific information about a topic. Writers use precise language to convey vivid images, add interest to writing, and communicate complex ideas in a way that is easily understood by readers.
Give example of presice language vs normal language
Original: New York State features several mountains.
Revision: New York State is home to three mountain ranges: the Adirondack Mountains, the Catskill Mountains, and the Appalachian Mountains.
Notice that the precise description in the revised version of the sentence gives an actual number of mountain ranges and lists their names. The description communicates more information to readers than the vague description in the original sentence.
The precise nouns, verbs, adjectives, or other parts of speech a writer chooses should engage readers and help them understand exactly what a writer means. Compare the ideas presented in the original and revised versions of this sentence:
Original: In the fall, visitors come to upstate New York to see the leaves change.
Revision: In September and October, visitors flock to upstate New York to witness the vivid colors of the maple, oak, and beech trees.
Original: In the fall, visitors come to upstate New York to see the leaves change.
Revision: In September and October, visitors flock to upstate New York to witness the vivid colors of the maple, oak, and beech trees.
Elborate
The revised version of the sentence starts off with exact months instead of a general season. The writer changed the word come to flock, suggesting that a large number of people visit at the same time, and changed the word see to witness to suggest that something important is observed. Finally, the writer replaced “the leaves change” with a description of the “vivid colors” and the names of specific trees. Consider how the revised sentence creates a clearer explanation while engaging readers by helping them visualize the scene. Using precise language enabled this writer to communicate ideas clearly.
