Ilium posterior to posterior gluteal line; dorsal surface of sacrum and coccyx; sacrotuberous ligament
Glut max insertion
Most fibers end in iliotibial tract (lateral condyle of tibia); some insert on gluteal tuberosity
Glut max innervation
Inferior gluteal L5, S1, S2
Glut max action
Extends thigh (from flexed position) and laterally rotates; steadies thigh , assists in rising from sitting position
Glut med origin
External surface of ilium between anterior and posterior gluteal line
Glut med insertion
Lateral surface of greater trochanter of femur
Glut med innervation
Superior gluteal nerve L5, S1
Glut med action
Abduct and medially rotate thigh; keeps pelvis level when same side limb is weight bearing and advance unsupported side in swing phase
Glut min origin

Glut min insertion
Anterior surface of greater trochanter of femur
Glut min innervation

ASIS; anterior part of iliac crest
TFL insertion
Iliotibial tract (lateral condyle of tibia)

Laterally rotate extended thigh and abduct flexed thigh; steady femoral head in acetabulum
Obturator internus origin
Pelvis surface of obturator membrane and surrounding bones
Obturator internus insertion
Medial surface of greater trochanter (trochanteric fossa) of femur
Obturator internus innervation
Nerve to obturator internus L5, S1
Obturator internus action
Laterally rotate extended thigh and abduct flexed thigh; steady femoral head in acetabulum
