Integrative Therapies:

Black Cohosh
Treat Menopause, Acts as an estrogen substitute
Adverse Effects:
- Gi destress, lightheaded, headache, rash, weight gain.
- Can’t use it when pregnant.
Don’t use more than 6 months
Echinacea
-Stimulates the immune system
to decrease inflammation
-Topically heals skin disorders, wounds, and burns.
-Treats viruses ( common cold, herpes)
- Used to treat T lymphocytes, tumor necrosis factor, interferon production
Adverse effects:
-Bitter taste
-Mild GI discomfort
-Fever
- Allergic reaction for those allergic to plants
Can’t use more than 6 months if on Anti - Virals
Feverfew
Decrease migraines
Stop blood from clotting
Adverse effects:
GI discomfort
When the patient stops taking causes agitation, tiredness, inability to sleep, headache, and joint discomfort.
Aloe Vera
- Soothes pain
- Heals Burns
- Soften Skin
Adverse Affects:
Cause skin irritation
Taking by mouth can cause fluid imbalance
Avoid clients who have kidney disorder and a history of Cardiac disorder
Kava
- Promote sleep
- Decrease Anxiety
- promotes muscle relaxation
- Don’t effect concentration
Adverse Effect:
- Chronic use cause dry, flaky skin, and jaundice
- Chronic use and large doses can cause liver damage, and severe liver failure.
Valerian
-Help relaxes you
- Reduce Anxiety
- Drowsiness effect increases over time.
Adverse effect:
Drowsiness, lightheadedness, depression
risk of physical dependence
- mental health disorders should use with caution.
Ginger
-Relieves vertigo
-relieves Nausea
-increase gastric mucous production
-decrease GI spasms
-produce an anti-inflammatory effect.
-thin blood
-morning sickness
-motion sickness
-decrease pain and stiffness of Rheumatoid arthritis.
Side Effects:
-Pregnant women can have Uterine contractions
-Potential CNS depression and Cardiac Dysrhythmia with excessive ingestion.
Cannabis
Chronic Pain
Glucosamine
- Stimulates cells to make cartilage and synovial fluid
- Suppresses inflammation of the joints and cartilage degradation
- Treat osteoarthritis of the knee, hip, and wrist
- This supplement is often taken with chondroitin.
Side Effects:
Mild GI upset: Nausea, Heartburn
Use with caution in clients who have a shellfish allergy.
St. John’s Wort
Antidepressant.
Pain reliever
Applied Topically for infections
Adverse effects: Dry mouth, GI upset, light head
Skin rash if exposed to the sun.
Decrease medications for auto immune and blood thinners.
Garlic
when crushed forms the allicin
lower blood pressure
blood thinner
helps with Nausea
Adverse effects: GI Manifestations, bad breath, body odor.
Ginkgo
Improves memory, Decrease Leg Pain thins blood

Are you taking Digoxin, diuretics, corticosteroids, and Antidysrhythmics
If taken orally can cause Fluid imbalance
