13
Q

What are structural adaptations?

A

Features of an organisms body

E.g. arctic foxes have white fur to camouflage / polar bears have large paws to stay on top of snow

Q

What are behavioural adaptations?

A

Ways that organisms behave

E.g. lions hunt in packs

15
Q

What are functional adaptations?

A

Processes within an organisms body

E.g. bears hibernate in winter and slow their metabolism

16
Q

What are extremophiles?

A

Organisms that are adapted to living in extreme conditions

17
Q

What are the two types of sampling?

A

Random & systematic

18
Q

What is a quadrat?

A

Square of a known area used to measure abundance of species

19
Q

What is the water cycle?

A

Evaporation - condensation - precipitation - transpiration / surface run off

20
Q

What are the factors affecting the rate of decay?

A

Warm temperature, oxygen, moist, microorganisms

21
Q

What is biogas?

A

Gas produced when microorganisms anaerobically decay sewage

22
Q

What is a batch generator?

A

Makes small batches of biogas
Waste manually loaded

23
Q

What is a continuous generator?

A

Makes biogas constantly on a large scale

24
Q

What are the factors that affect species distribution?

A

Temperature, water availability, atmospheric gasses

25
What are the 4 ways humans use land?
Building, quarrying, farming, dumping waste
26
What are the two uses for deforestation?
Clear land for farming Grow crops for biofuel
27
What are peat bogs?
Areas of land that are acidic and water-logged Made up of plants that haven’t fully decayed because of a lack of oxygen
28
What happens when peat bogs are drained?
Peat is drained and burned as a fuel so releases carbon dioxide.
29
What are the biological causes of global warming?
Sea levels rise = flooding & loss of habitats Changes in temperatures and rainfall patterns = distribution changes Migration patterns change Biodiversity reduced as animals become extinct
