Primary victim
A truly innocent person who was either in the wrong place or born into a maladjusted family.
Secondary victim
Individuals close to the primary victim, such as family or friends, who suffer emotionally or psychologically due to the victimization.
Sexual victimization
The experience of being subjected to unwanted sexual acts or advances, which can include rape, sexual assault, and harassment.
Date rape
Sexual assault that occurs in the context of a dating relationship, often involving coercion or force.
Stages of victim response
Shock, denial, and integration—common phases a victim undergoes after sexual assault.
Victims’ rights groups
Organizations formed to support victims of crimes, often founded after a traumatic or high-profile event.
Castration
The physical removal of male testicles as a means to control sexual offending.
Rehabilitation
The process by which offenders are changed through treatment to once again become normal, functioning members of society.
Habilitation
A process where offenders are changed through treatment not just to return to former status, but to become functioning members of society.
Meta-analysis
An analytic technique in which results from multiple studies are combined to make generalizations about treatment effectiveness.
Incapacitation
A corrections goal that seeks to protect the public by imprisoning offenders so they cannot commit further crimes.
Retribution
A corrections approach in which offenders are punished to make them pay for their crimes.
Behaviour therapy
Uses rewards and punishments to change offenders’ sexual behavior patterns and scripts.
Cognitive therapy
Aims to change offenders’ perceptions and teach appropriate emotional expression and awareness of danger signs.
Medical treatment
Use of drugs such as Depo-Provera to lower testosterone levels and reduce physical sexual urges.
Depo-Provera
A synthetic progestin that lowers testosterone levels and controls sexual urges, used as a treatment for sex offenders.
