Women in Islam
A man was able to take up to four wives if he could afford it, due to the perpetual warfare leaving many widows. Divorce was allowed. The dowry belonged to the wife, if there was a divorce the money continued on with her. Different sects of Islam interpret differently what a woman must wear in the terms of hijab/burnish. Female infanticide outlawed.
Shi’ite Muslim 661
A sect of Islam that diverted from Sunni Muslim when Ali was assassinated in 661. Shiite is actually shortened term for followers of Ali. Unlike Sunni, believes the caliph should be chosen based on blood as Ali had married Muhammad’s daughter, therefore his blood would be in the son. Believe the Sunni tamper with the Quran.
Muhammad 570-630
570-633. Married khadija, who is his matron supporter and a widow, and has one daughter with her named Fatimah. He was a great advocate for social justice as he identifies with the disenfranchised, as he was an orphan. Believes that Christianity/judiasm interpreted the stories wrong, and that Ishmael was the important son. Allegedly illiterate which is a big deal bc that means his stories couldn’t be read and influenced
Early Christian belief and practice 100-150
