Flashcards in upper limb shoulder Deck (19):
1

what components make up the pectoral girdle?

the clavicle and scapula

2

which muscles attach the scapula to the trunk?

rhomboids
levator scapulae
trapezoid
serratus anterior

3

what movements can the pectoral girdle do?

retraction
protraction
depression
elevation
rotation

4

what does the trapezius do?

rotate scapula during abduction of humerus

5

what does elevator scapulae do?

elevate scapula and rotate scapula medially

6

what does rhomboid major and minor do?

retract the scapula medially and superiorly

7

what does serrates anterior do?

protracts scapula and rotates it laterally

8

what happens if there is damage to the long thoracic nerve?

winged scapula - medial border and inferior angle pull away from thoracic wall

9

what is the shoulder joint

the glenohumeral joint = ball and socket joint between head of humerus and glenoid fossa of scapula
not very stable joint
joint = weakest inferiorly

10

what is a bursa

a fluid filled sac that reduces friction between tissues of the body

11

what is painful arc syndrome?

calcific bursitis - caused by inflammation of bursa after excessive use of joint - pain during 50-130 degrees of abduction

12

what are the rotator cuff muscles?

teres minor
infraspinatus
supraspinatus
subscapularis

13

what are the symptoms of a rotator cuff injury?

pain when arm is overhead and weakness

14

what is the result of excessive extension and lateral rotation of humerus?

dislocation of glenohumeral joint

15

which aspect of shoulder is weakest?

the inferior aspect of shoulder joint

16

which muscle initiates abduction at shoulder joint?

supraspinatus

17

which muscle acts as powerful abductor of shoulder joint, after 15 degrees?

deltoid

18

what are the boundaries of the quadrangular space?

long head of biceps brachia
theres major
surgical neck of humerus
teres minor

19

what are the contents of the quadrangular space?

the axillary nerve and the posterior circumflex artery and vein
