Urinary System Flashcards
(13 cards)
Main functions
- Excretion of waste
- Regulation of blood volume
- Regulation of vitamins and minerals
- Regulation of pH of extra cellular fluid – secrete hydrogen (take everything out, then put good stuff back in$
- Regulation of blood cell synthesis.
- Synthesis of vitamin D
What will we focus on?
Excretion
Parts of the urinary system
- Kidneys – two – smaller than a fist, lower back, just below ribs, belly button height
- Ureters – two – take urine from kidneys to bladder – sometimes liquids, turn to a solid, which makes a kidney stone – some smooth muscle that uses peristalsis to send urine into bladder
- Bladder – stored urine until convenient to get rid of it – usually .5 L to feel like we have to go.
- Urethra – tube that sends urine outside of body – urea is mostly proteins
Location of kidneys
Back of a abdominal cavity, just below ribs below spinal cavity, indented part is medial
Parts of the kidney
Cortex – outer part/layer
Medulla – indented part, inner area that has cone shaped renal pyramids
Calyces – minor – funnel
Major – converge to form pelvis
Pelvis – last big funnel – dumps into ureter
Hilum – dental wear blood vessels and ureter attach
What is the functional part of the kidneys?
Nephron – 1 million per kidney
Glomerulous
Blood vessel packed together in a small space – long, but doesn’t go long distance
Bowman’s capsule
A ball around the glamorous, catching all fluid that comes out
Proximal convoluted tube
Close and twisted in cortex – fluid drains here
Loop of Henle
Straight part that dives deep into medulla
Distal convoluted tube
Back in cortex and become convoluted again
Collecting ducts
Where everything is dumped
The order of events after the collecting ducts
Minor calyces
Major calyces
Renal pelvis
Ureter
