Urinary System Flashcards
(37 cards)
What are the two main components of the urinary system?
paired, dorsal kidneys, and urine conducting organs
What three organs make up the urine conducting organs?
ureters, bladder, urethra
What are the three functions of the urinary system?
- control of blood pressure
- water recycling
- excretion
What is excretion?
ridding the body of extra factors
What factors comes out in urine?
water, foreign substances (drugs), and metabolic byproducts such as ions, and nitrogenous wastes
What is nitrogenous waste from?
metabolism of proteins
What are the three types of nitrogenous waste from high to low toxicity?
- ammonia
- urea
- uric acid
What do the kidneys do?
process/filter blood from renal artery
What does kidney work?
cellular tubules
What are the two types of tubules?
nephrons and collecting ducts
What do nephrons do?
make urine and deliver it to the collecting ducts
What do the collecting ducts do?
dump urine into branches of ureters
What is glomerulus?
a blood sieve due to holes in capillaries
What are the three steps to urine formation?
- glomerular filtration
- tubular reabsorption
- tubular secretion
What is glomerular filtration?
blood pressure forces plasma through the glomerular sieve
What does filtration in the nephrons EXCLUDE?
blood cells and protection
What does filtration in the nephrons INCLUDE?
little factors such as nitrogenous wastes, ions, sugars, and amino acids
Where do the little factors go?
they enter the renal tubules
What is tubular reabsorption?
molecules/ions are moved from the tubules into the peritubular capillaries to be reabsorbed
What is tubular secretion?
ions, some nitrogenous wastes are moved from the peritubular capillaries into the renal tubule to be secreted
What is the kidney’s “power”?
the ability to reabsorb water
What animals have the most powerful kidneys?
marine mammals
What adaptation of marine fishes assist their urinary system?
gills excrete excess salts
What adaptation of sharks assist their urinary system?
rectal glands
