How does urine pass through the urinary system?
Kidneys form it
Passes into ureters (long tubes)
Goes into bladder
Released by urethral sphincters
Passes to outside body via urethra
What are the functions of the urinary system?
Eliminates waste from blood
Maintains homeostatsis within the body (Water, salt, glucose, ph)
What do nephrons do?
Separate nutrients and minerals in the blood from toxins
Cleans blood and recirculates it
Ureters
Transports urine from kidneys to the bladder
What is an example of normal adult urine?
Light yellow. None or very slight smell. 15000mls/24 hours
If you have brown ale coloured urine what is it a sign of?
Liver disease or severe dehydration
If your urine is pink or red what could it be a sign of?
Berries beets, UTIs or Prostate problems.
What are some age related changes of the urinary system?
Concentrated urine
Higher frequency or urination
Smaller Bladder
Incontinence due to weakened sphincter muscle
Kidneys less effective
Electrolyte or Fluid imbalance
Less blood flow through kidneys
DIALYSIS
Removes waste/toxins from blood.
HEMATURIA
Blood in urine
Dyseria
Painful urine
Continence
Ability to hold bladder
Incontinence
Inability to hold ones bladder
What is a UTI?
Urinary Tract Infection
What can cause a UTI?
Poor fluid intake
Pathogens entering uria (bad perinal care)

Frquency and urgency
Pain when urinating
How to manage UTI?
Antibiotics
Increase Fluid
Cranberry juice

Assist with bathroom care
Encourage fluid
Provide good pericare
