American Revolution + Colonial America (24 cards)
Second Continental Congress
People from each of the 13 colonies sent a representative to attend a meeting to discuss the American Revolution or the Revolutionary War
Olive Branch Petition
a treaty written by American loyalty to appease the Crown and beg him to prevent future hostilities. (Failed)
Common Sense
a book written by Thomas Paine to encourage colonists to be independent from Great Britain and be ruled by someone chose by the people.
Hoped for the Seperation from Great Britain.
Declaration of Independence (D.O.I)
Declaration written by Jefferson to explain the atrocities Great Britain has done to the colonies and how they were unfairly treated, justifying their means of seperation and independence from Great Britain.
Loyalists
Colonists who were loyal to the Crown and did not support ideas of independence.
Patriots
Colonists who wanted the Seperation from Great Britain and were “American Rebels”
Battle of Saratoga
Turning Point in the American Revolution, gave Americans the advantage. Helped secure French support for the war.
Paris Treaty of 1783
Peace Treaty signed by both parties (Britain and the United States) to end the revolutionary war.
Battle of Yorktown (1781)
George Washington with the aid of the French army besieged Cornwallis at Yorktown, dealing heavy blow to the British War Effort and paving the way for eventual peace
Battle of Long Island
Battle for the control of New York. British troops overwhelmed the colonial militias and retained control of the city for most of the war.
Battle of Trenton
George Washington surprised and captured a garrison (troops stationed in a fortress) of sleeping German Hessians and raised the morale of his army.
Boston Tea Party
Rowdy Protest against the British East India Company’s newly acquired monopoly on the tea trade. Colonists disguised as indians dumped 342 chests of tea into the Boston Harbor. This made Great Britain react harshly towards the colonies and granted greater punishments.
French Indian War
Great Britain battling the French for the Ohio River. Indians helped the french.
Mercantilism
a country’s belief that wealth was power and for a country to have wealth they also acquired political and military power
Proclamation of 1776
a proclamation that prohibited people from settling in the area beyond the Appalachians , that the British created to avoid a dangerous battle over this land that happened before
Sugar Act
first law created to increase tax revenue for the crown from the colonies. It increased the tax on sugar which greatly upset the American colonists
Quartering Act
a measure that required some colonies to provide food and living quarters for British troops. This caused great resentment for the crown by the colonists.
Stamp Tax
Measure created to try and raise revenue to support the military. It mandated the use of stamped paper (certified payment of tax). It was required around 50 trade items and various legal documents
Sons of Liberty
Group of People that “took the law into their own hands” to protest against British rules. They were often very violent with their methods.
Boston Massacre
An event where troops were provoked by a nearby crowd and opened fire on them. Where they killed/wounded 11 citizens.
Commitees of Correspondence
Groups of people to spread the word and encouragement of resistance against the British and their rule by various methods.
Intolerable Acts
Set of Acts that took away many rights of colonists in reaction to the Boston Tea Party
First Continental Congress
Group that was ready to meet in Philadelphia in order to discuss ways to rectify colonial grievances. Many men from various colonies sent men to this meeting
Lexington and Concord
a war by the British in hopes of putting an end to the revolutionary hopes because they took the colonies supply of Gunpowder, as well as an attempt to capture the leaders. Instead, the people at Concord fought back (while those at Lexington), which left the British realizing they have started a war with the colonists.
