Using Resources (P2) Flashcards
(5 cards)
Name the extraction process which uses bacteria and its process:
Bioleaching - Bacteria is used to convert the copper compounds in the ore to soluble copper compounds, separating out the copper from the ore in the process. The leachate (solution produced in process)
contains copper ions which can be extracted by electrolysis or displacement.
Why is copper extracted from low-grade ores?
To improve its sustainability as it is finite.
Name the extraction process which uses plants and its process:
Phytomining - This involves growing plants in soil that contains copper. The copper gradually builds up in the leaves. The plants can be harvested, dried and burned in a furnace. The ash contains copper ions which can be extracted by electrolysis or displacement.
Give an advantage and disadvantage of extracting cooper form low-grade ores:
Advantages - Smaller impact on the environment
Disadvantage - The processes are slow.
What does a Life Cycle Assessment do?
Looks at every stage of a product’s life to assess the impact it would have on the environment.
