Venous Lecture Quiz Flashcards
(33 cards)
Embolus definition
a blood clot that travels from one part of the body to another through the circulatory system
USA admissions rate for PE per year
300,000-600,000
USA death rate for PE per year
50,000
Thrombosis
clotting of blood
thrombus
blood clot that forms in a vessel and remains there
Pulmonary Embolus
Abbreviated (PE). Is a sudden blockage in a lung artery. The blockage usually is caused by a blood clot that travels to the lung from a vein in the leg
Virchow, Rudolf
A German physician, pathologist, philosopher. Invented idea of pulmonary embolism occurring. He invented the words embolization and thrombus. Proved PE happens by putting clotted blood in dogs Iliac veins and proving how PE happens
What is Virchows Triad?
Explains what causes people to have clotting in their veins
Virchows Triad 3 things
Stasis- not moving for long periods of time.
Injury- car accident, broken bone, surgery (increases chances of having a blockage)
Hypercoagulability- Increased ability to clot
Injury 5 examples
Trauma.
total hip replacement.
car accident.
fracture.
central catheter (chemo)
Hypercoagulability 5 examples
cancer.
post-op.
post-trauma.
pregnancy (6x) oral contraception
stasis 5 examples
Bedrest-elderly.
post-op.
post-mi 35%
Cva 60%
paraplegia-paralyzed 90%
signs and symptoms of lower extremity DVT (3)
Swelling of the leg.
Pain in the leg or calf.
Discoloration (usually purple)
Gross Anatomy
The branch of anatomy that deals with the structure of organs and tissues that are visible to the naked eye
Thrill
A vibration felt by the examiner
Bruit
Sound. Typically an abnormal one, heard through a stethoscope. (Murmur)
Palpation or To Palpate
The process of using ones hands to examine the body, especially while perceiving or diagnosing a disease or illness
Acute
Just happened or recently happened
Chronic
Having a persisting illness for a long time or constantly recurring
Duplex
Combination of Doppler and B-mode(image)
Bullet embolus
A bullet that enters the blood stream and embolizes (travels) to a different part of the body
Paradoxical embolus
Occasionally causes right to left septal defect which causes a blood clot to go somewhere else other than legs. Starts as a venous embolus and ends up as a blockage in the arterial system
CVI
Chronic Venous Insufficiency
Chronic Venous Insufficiency (CVI)
When valves get stuck open in the veins. Don’t keep blood flowing in the right direction
