Ventricle Physiology Flashcards
(9 cards)
What are the two lower chambers of the heart called?
The right and left ventricles
How do the walls of the ventricles compare to the walls of the atria?
The walls of the ventricles are much thicker than the atria walls
What type of blood does the right ventricle pump?
Deoxygenated blood to the lungs
What type of blood does the left ventricle pump?
Oxygenated blood throughout the body
What is produced at the apex of the heart when the left ventricle contracts?
An impulse palpable at the apex of the heart (apical impulse)
What happens to the left ventricle during contraction?
It rotates forward
What does the rotation of the left ventricle cause?
The apex of the left ventricle strikes the chest wall
What is another name for the apical impulse?
Point of maximal impulse (PMI)
Where is the PMI normally located?
On the left anterior part of the chest, at the fifth intercostal space (ICS) along the midclavicular line
