vestibular Flashcards
(14 cards)
What does the bony labyrinth consist of?
3 semicircular canals
vestibule (central chamber)
cochlea (organ of hearing)
filled w perilymph fluid
Where do the labyrinthine arteries branch off of?
AICA or basilar artery
What do hair bundles do?
convert mechanical stimuli (displacement due to head motion) into neural firing
What is the longest hair cell called?
kinocilium
If firing rate is deflected toward the kinocilium, is that going to cause excitation or inhibition?
Excitation/depolarization, increased rate of firing, ampullopetal
What are the otilith organs?
utricle
saccule
What are the three semicircular canals?
anterior
posterior
horizontal
What type of movement do the utricle and saccule respond to?
linear acceleration and static tilt
What axes of linear movement do the utricle and saccule respond to?
Utricle: horizontal
saccule: vertical (particularly gravity)
What is the name for the sheet of calcium carbonate crystals on top of and within otolithic membrane? What does it do?
Otoconia, est mass, so hair bundles are subject to gravity, provides inertia, shearing force
What is the curved zone in the macula of each otolith that separates direction of hair cell polarization on each side of the otoliths? It establishes a push/pull arrangement?
Striola
