Q

Parvovirus

  • genome, spread
  • pathology, cell target
  • 3 groups of Px
A

think Parvovirus B19
- 5th disease

ssDNA, NO envelop - simplest DNA virus
body fluids

  • Fifth Disease (Erythema Infectiosum) (slapped cheek, or lacy reticulated)
  • TARGETS HUMANS ERYTHROID PROGENITOR CELLS causes lysis of cells leading to anaemia. Can also affect lymphocytes, granulocytes and platelets.
  • transient Bone Marrow Suppression
  • Immunocompromised - aplastic crisis
  • Chronic anemic px - aplastic crisis
  • Pregnant - non immune hydrops fetalis

Q

Prions

note not antigenic - hence immunosuppression useless

what isit
how spread
whats teh disease
pathology appearance
diagnosis
A

misfolded proteins with the ability to transmit their misfolded shape onto normal variants of the same protein

contaminated transplant; EEG electrodes

CJD
- myoclonic jerks

  • spongiform appearance, CNS vacuolated neurons
    14 3 3 protein in CSF
    EEG periodic sharp waves complex

Q

HIV

  • genome, envelop?
  • membrane and capsid markers?
  • seroconversion period
  • critical point of CD4
  • Lab diagnosis
  • transmission
A

2 ssRNA, enveloped

p17 membrane, p24 capsid

  • 6 months
  • 200cells/mm3 CD4

ELISA plus p24 (note ELISA AB seroconversion 6 months)
- must confirm w western blot

Vertical can;
Mucous membrane and blood contact is needed;
- breast milk yes, saliva no, pre cum no
