Volcanoes Flashcards
(26 cards)
Where are volcanoes most commonly found?
The ring of fire, or the Pacific plate.
What is a ‘hot spot’ in terms of volcanoes?
It is places in the middle of a plate where volcanoes are found.
Why do ‘hot spots’ occur? Give an example of one.
Because of hotter than usual magma under the crust, and Hawaii is a good example of this.
What are the 3 main categories of volcanoes?
- Active volcanoes
- Dormant volcanoes
- Extinct volcanoes
Give the definition of an active volcano.
Volcanoes that have erupted at least once in the last 10 000 years.
Give the definition of a dormant volcano.
Volcanoes that have not erupted in the last 2000 years but are expected to erupt again.
Give the definition of an extinct volcano.
Volcanoes that have not erupted in the last 10 000 years and are not expected to erupt again.
What is a cinder cone volcano?
A very small type of volcano with steep sides.
What are geysers?
Springs of boiling water caused by volcanic heat and trapped water.
What is a shield volcano?
It is a very large type of volcano with sloping sides. It normally has runny lava that moves quite far before cooling. They have no explosive eruptions and are found at divergent plate margins.
What is a crater?
A circular depression formed at a vent by a volcanic explosion.
What is a conduit?
An underground passage that magma travels through.
What is a summit?
The highest point of a volcano.
What is a vent (volcanic term)?
What is a throat (volcano term)?
The entrance of a volcano.
What is a strato (composite) volcano?
A type of volcano with steep sides and a broad base. They normally have thick magma that doesn’t get very far before cooling. They have most commonly explosive eruptions and are found along convergent plate
What is lava?
Molten rock from volcanoes that solidifies as it cools.
What is a
What is a shield volcano?
A very large volcano with gradually sloping sides. It has very runny lava and no explosive eruptions. Found at divergent plate margins.
What is a geyser?
A spring close to a volcano of previously trapped water boiled by volcanic heat.
What is a conduit?
A passage that magma flows through in a volcano.
What is a summit?
The highest point of a volcano.
What is a throat (volcanic term)?
The top entrance to a volcano.
What is a composite or stratovolcano?
A large volcano with steep sides and a broad base. It has thick magma and explosive eruptions. Found near convergent plate margins.
