W8L1 - Gene Expression II Flashcards
(14 cards)
Where are all the proteins synthesised
Ribosome
What is tRNA
Amino acid attached to one end of the tRNA, the other end has a triplet code that base-pair with the mRNA
What are the stop codons
UAA, UAG, UGA
What are the start codons
AUG
How many different aminoacyl-tRNA synthetases and tRNAs are present in humans
20 for both
How do antibiotics work
attacks RNA polymerase and ribosomes, stopping them from making the proteins they need to survive.
What does Rifampin do?
blocks enzyme that makes mRNA from DNA
What does 30S Ribosomal Subunit do?
Bacteria have 70S ribosomes, 30S inhibitors block translation at the small ribosomal subunit
What does 50S Ribosomal Subunit do
These drugs block the large subunit (50S) of the bacterial ribosome.
Prevents the protein chain from being formed during translation.
In prokaryotes where does control of gene expression occur?
Transcription
What does an increase in transcripts mean
increase in proteins
Where does the control of gene expression occur in eukaryotes
Most important level is at transcription other levels include processing transport and degradation of the mRNA.
Do eukaryotic mRNA live longer or prokayotic?
eukaryotic
