Types of WBC
Granulocytes
Agranular leukocytes
Granulocytes
NeutroPHILS
EosinoPHILS
BasoPHILS
Agranular leukocytes
LymphoCYTES
MonoCYTES
Neutrophil function
50-70% of circulating WBC (3000-7000 normal range)
Phagocytosis is main function
Increase in “band level” is called a LEFT shift which is # of immature cells (occurs with infection, inflammation, significant physical stress)
Primarily responsible for sustaining normal host defenses
Eosinophils
1-3% of WBC (abundant in mucous membranes of resp, GI, GU systems
100-400 normal range
Increases during allergies, parasitic infections, diseases of spleen and CNS
Destroy foreign cells
Hypersensitivity reactions
Basophils
0.4-1% of WBC (20-50 normal range)
Increases with allergies, inflammatory disorders, infection, parasites
Releases histamine, heparin
Lymphocyte
20-35% of WBC (1500-3000 normal range)
Increases with infections and immune responses
Direct cell attack or through antibodies
Monocyte
3-8% of WBC (100-700 normal range)
Increases with viral diseases and chronic inflammation
Develop into macrophages/phagocytize bacteria and debris
