Neutrophil function

A

50-70% of circulating WBC (3000-7000 normal range)
Phagocytosis is main function
Increase in “band level” is called a LEFT shift which is # of immature cells (occurs with infection, inflammation, significant physical stress)
Primarily responsible for sustaining normal host defenses

1-3% of WBC (abundant in mucous membranes of resp, GI, GU systems
100-400 normal range
Increases during allergies, parasitic infections, diseases of spleen and CNS
Destroy foreign cells
Hypersensitivity reactions
