Weather Flashcards
(18 cards)
Southwest monsoon
Heavy rain to the Indian subcontinent (wind from Australia)
Northeast monsoon
Heavy rain to Australia (wind from the Indian subcontinent and Central Asia)
Equatorial climate (2)
Singapore and Johor, Malaysia
Monsoon climate (2)
Chittagong, Bangladesh and Mumbai, India
Cool temperate / marine West Coast climate (2)
London, England and Vancouver, Canada
Climate related hazards (2)
Floods and storm
Agriculture (climate change)
Argentina. 30% of total greenhouse emissions from methane from cows
Deforestation (climate change)
Australia lost more than 2.5 Mil hectares of forest between 2005 and 2010
Industries, production of goods and services (climate change) (2)
Europe emit 6 mil tonnes, while Asia emit 15 bil tonnes in 2012
Urbanisation (climate change) (3)
Heating, cooling, cooking, lighting
Constructing infrastructure
Cars, buses and other forms of transport
Sea level rise (impact of climate change)
660 mil people like in areas 10m above sea level, 33% of coastal and wetland habitats lost in next 100 years
More frequent extreme weather events (impact of climate change)
Heatwave in Europe, 2003, killed more than 70,000 people
Spread of infectious insect-borne diseases (impact of climate change)
Dengue fever reported in cool climate areas of Nepal and Bhutan for the first time in 2004
Lengthen the growing time in certain regions (impact of climate change) (1 +ve, 1 -ve)
+ve: New crops blackberries and maize can be cultivated in UK
-ve: In Yunnan, China, reduced production of apples, cherries, almonds and walnuts
Kyoto protocol (international agreement) (5)
- First drawn up in Kyoto, Japan on 11 Dec 1997
- from 2008 to 2012, countries had to reduce emissions by >5% of 1990 levels
- success: Finland, Greece, Ireland met targets
- limitations: Denmark, Austria, Spain did not meet targets
- China, India, USA did not sign, causing global emissions increase by 35%
Singapore green plan 2012: using natural gas as an energy source (4)
- Launched by ministry of environment in 2002
- aim to generate 60% energy needs from natural gas by 2012
- success: early as 2010, 79% electricity generated from natural gas
- limitations: requires expensive pipelines to transport
Green mark scheme: constructing ‘green’ buildings (4)
- launched by building construction authority in 2005
- aim for buildings to have greater energy efficiency, promotes energy conservation, reduce energy consumption
- successes: Plaza by the park reported energy savings of 15-35%
- limitations: construction companies, developers, conservative towards new ideas. Green materials (bamboo) more expensive
Plant a tree programme: planting more trees and plants (4)
- started in 1971 by garden city fund
- residents encouraged to donate to fund tree planting events
- successes: contributed to 60,000 trees planted yearly, remove CO2 from atmosphere
- limitations: effects take time to materialise; relatively fast growing trees take 25 years to mature
