Weathering Flashcards
(7 cards)
Mechanical weathering
Break down of rocks without changing the chemical composition
Freeze thaw weathering
Happens when temps alternate from over to below 0°. Water enters rocks that have cracks like granite. When the water freezes it expands, putting pressure on the rock. When water thaws it contracts again putting pressure on the rock. Repeated freeze thawing widens crack and overtime the rock breaks up
Thaw
Water changing from frozen to softer of liquid
Chemical weathering
breakdown of rocks due to changing their chemical composition
Example of chemical weathering.
Carbonate weathering- Rain water contains dissolved CO2 and this rain water dissolves certain rocks like limestone which contains calcium carbonate when it reacts.
Biological weathering.
The break down of rock because of the actions of living organisms usually animals or plants.
Example of biological weathering:
Tree roots grow on crack in rocks, as tree roots grow and widen the crack widens and overtime weakens and breaks
