Mental Health
Mental health is a state of mental well-being that enables people to cope with the stresses of life, realize their abilities, learn well and work well, and contribute to their community
Underpins our individual and collective abilities to make decisions and build relationships
Basic human right
Crucial to personal, community and socio-economic development
Mental Illness
a condition that causes alterations in an individual’s thoughts, mood and/or behavior and includes significant functional impairment?
an impairment in functioning with diagnosable signs and symptoms.
Wellbeing
a state that occurs when individuals have the psychological, social and physical resources they need to meet a particular challenge
Mental Health Problems Symptoms:
Extreme mental distress
Mental changes (thinking, mood, and behavior) that significantly affect the way a person copes or functions.
Extended/significant distress, coping and impaired functioning
Who can diagnose mental illnesses?
Medical doctors including psychiatrists
Psychologists
Mental health and mental illness:
They are conceptualized as 2 intersecting continua
two distinct, related dimensions
From poor mental health to optimal mental health & From no symptoms of mental illness to serious mental illness
What causes mental illness:
There is no single cause of any mental health problem or illness.
Most studies suggest that a combination of factors contribute to the:
-gentic factors
- biological factors
- environmental factors
- physical factors
Social determinants of Health:
Basic needs including housing, social connections, and food security are important for good mental health
Top 3 determinants that effect mental health are:
1) social inclusion
2) freedom from discrimination and violence and
3) access to economic resources

Stigma
negative attitudes and beliefs (prejudice)
Discrimination
Negative responses = behaviour that results from stigma
Ableist language
devalues anyone with a disability e.g., crazy, lunatic, psycho,“so depressed my favourite show is being canceled”
