Week 1: Male & Female Reproductive Histology Flashcards
(41 cards)
Male reproductive system

Describe the histological organization of the testis

Histology of the seminiferous tubules

The seminiferous tubule consists of…
- The seminiferous tubule consists of a central lumen lined by a specialized seminiferous epithelium containing two distinct cell populations
- Somatic Sertoli cells
- Spermatogenic cells
What are Sertoli cells?

Sertoli cell histology

The spermatogenic cells are?
- spermatogonia
- Spermatocytes
- Spermatids
What are spermatogonia?
- diploid stem cells of the testis
- they have small dense oval nuclei and are closely associated with the semniferous tubular wall within the basal compartment of the tubule
- The spermatogonia divide by mitosis to generate two daughter cells
- one daughter cell initiates a spermatogenic cell sequence (spermatogenesis)
- The other cell becomes a spermatogonium with self-renewing capacity and is soon able to divide and initiate another spermatogenic cell sequence

Primary and secondary spermatocytes histology

What is the difference between spermatogenesis and spermiogenesis

What is the epididymis?

Histological features of epididymis

What is the vas deferens?

Prostate gross histology

Prostate histology

What is BPH?

Prostate cancer and histology

Describe female reproductive system histology

Describe the histological organization of the ovary and phases of the ovarian cycle

Describe the phases of the ovarian cycle and ovulation

Describe the follicular phase

Describe the primordial follicles

Describe the Secondary (multilayered) follicles

Describe the antral follicle
