16
Q

What are the 2 joints of the thoracic cage?

A

Costovertebral + costotransverse

17
Q

What type of joints are the Costovertebral + costotransverse?

18
Q

What are the articular surfaces of the Costovertebral joint?

A
  • Head of the rib
  • Facet of the body of the thoracic vertebrae
19
Q

what are the articular surfaces of the costotransverse joints?

A
  • Tubercle of the rib
  • Facet of the transverse process of the thoracic vertebrae
20
Q

What are the muscles of the thoracic cage?

A
  • Diaphragm
  • Intercostals (external, internal, innermost)
21
Q

What is the role of the diaphragm?

A
  • Primary muscle of breathing
  • Contracts and lowers, increasing the thoracic cavity volume, thereby drawing air in and aiding inspiration
22
Q

What nerve supplies the diaphragm?

A
  • Phrenic nerve (arising from segements C3, 4, 5)
23
Q

What are the attachments of the diaphragm?

A
  • Internal surface of the lower 6 ribs
  • Anteriorly to the xiphloid process
  • Posteriorly to the bodies of L1-3
  • Fibres converge to insert into the central tendon
24
Q

What is the roles of the intercostals?

A
  • Provides structure and support between the ribs
  • Stiffens the space between the ribs
  • Role in breathing + posture
25
What is the role of the external intercostals?
- Assist with inspiration - When the muscles contract they shorten and lift the rib below to elevate the ribs
26
What is the role of the internal intercostals?
- Assist with expiration - Run in the opposite direction to the external intercostal muscle - Pulls the ribs downwards – depresses ribs and forces air outwards
27
Where do the external intercostals attach?
To the inferior boarder of the rib above to the superior boarder of the rib below
28
Where do the internal intercostals attach?
- From the inferior of the boarder of the rib above to the superior boarder of the rib below
