What is Communication Accommodation Theory (CAT)?
A theory developed by Howard Giles in the 1970s that explains how people adjust their communication to manage social relationships and convey messages effectively.
What is convergence in CAT?
Adapting communication to be more like the other person to reduce social distance and build rapport.
What is divergence in CAT?
Emphasizing differences in communication to assert identity or highlight group distinctions.
What does ‘maintenance’ mean in CAT?
Sustaining one’s default communication style without adapting it to the listener.
What is over-accommodation?
Modifying communication more than necessary, potentially leading to negative perceptions (e.g., talking loudly to a healthy elderly person).
What is under-accommodation?
Failing to adjust communication sufficiently, such as using technical jargon with a lay audience.
How does culture influence communication accommodation?
Cultural norms determine how convergence or divergence is interpreted and used; low vitality groups may face sanctions for not accommodating, while high vitality groups may face backlash if perceived as a threat.
What is the Participation Model in AAC?
A framework that supports meaningful participation for individuals with complex communication needs by addressing barriers and enhancing supports.
What are access barriers in the Participation Model?
Physical or sensory limitations that restrict an individual’s ability to communicate effectively.
What are opportunity barriers in the Participation Model?
Environmental or societal factors such as lack of trained partners or restrictive policies that hinder communication.
What are facilitators in the Participation Model?
Supportive actions like partner training, appropriate AAC tools, and inclusive environments that promote communication access.
What is the medical model of health and disability?
A perspective that views disability as a result of individual impairment and focuses on diagnosis and treatment.
What is the social model of health and disability?
A perspective that sees disability as arising from societal barriers and emphasizes changing environments and attitudes to support inclusion.
