Week 11 Flashcards
What are the key functions of skin
KEY FUNCTIONS
* Thermoregulation
* Blood reservoir
* Protection - pathogens, impact and abrasion
* Cutaneous sensations
* Synthesis of vitamin D
* Excretion of Vitamin D
What epithelium and cells make up the epidermis
Keratinised stratified squamous epithelium
Four cell types
* Keratinocytes
* Melanocytes
* Intraepidermal macrophages
* Tactile epithelial cells
Which structure of skin is avascular
epidermis
What is the function of the cells in epidermis
- Keratinocytes - most of skin - protection and water proof
- Melanocytes - produce melanin - protect against UV
- Intraepidermal macrophages - Immune protection
- Tactile epithelial cells - Merkel - Detect touch - deep epidermis
Get quized on 5 layers of epidermis
What CT is the dermis
Dense irregular connective tissue
What are the two regions
Papillary and reticular
Describe papillary
Blood vessels present
Nerve endings found
Describe reticular
Contain appendages of skin
Function of sweat glands and two layers
Eccrine - Primary function -> assist in maintaining body temp or thermoregulation
Open directly onto skin surface (not associated with hair)
Appocrine - Contain components that interact with bacteria living on skin surface, cause a characteristic smell or body odour
Found with hair
What is function of sebaceous glands
Responsible for secreting sebum (coats surface of hair and stops from drying out) - also prevent water (evaporation) and keep skin soft and pliable
What makes up the lymphatic system
Consists of
* Lymph
* Lymphatic vessels
* Lymph nodes
* Lymphatic tissue
What are the key functions of the lymphatic system
- To drain excess interstitial fluid; and return this fluid to the blood
- To transport dietary lipids that have been absorbed by the gastrointestinal system
- To carry out immune responses against foreign bodies
