(15 cards)
return to sport progression
- On-field rehabilitation (OFR)
- Return to training (RTT)
- Return to competitive match play (RTC)
- Return to performance (RTPerf)
risk tolerance 3 steps
1: assessment of health risk (tissue health)
2: assessment of activity risk (tissue stresses)
3: assessment of risk tolerance (risk tolerance modifiers)

Illinois agility test
what is the Illinois agility test
- 10m x 5m course, - start in a prone position with the hands at shoulder level.
- complete the test as quickly as possible after the command “go”
Battery of tests for
RTS post ankle injury 4 tests for RTS:
- Weight Bearing Dorsiflexion (WB DF) Test – predictive of future injury
- Star Excursion Balance test (SEBT) (Y-Balance test) – predictive of lower limb injury
- Agility test
- Vertical jump test
Return to play criteria after acute lateral ankle sprain injuries assess
- Performance of sport-specific and athletic skills
- Pain severity
- Ankle muscle function
- Ankle range of motion
- Balance and proprioception, ankle perception
- Psychological readiness
Injury or Re-Injury Prevention
- Ensure athlete is fully rehabilitated
- Return to sports at appropriate timing to prevent further injury, re-injury or injury of another area as a result of compensation
- Athlete is ready physically and psychologically for the demands of competition when returning to sport
Address potential risk factors -
Tape or brace?
- Both tape and brace can prevent second time ankle sprains but not first-time injuries
- Braces appear superior to tape in preventing second time ankle sprains
- Tape may restrict ankle eversion/inversion during exercise
Physiological Readiness
- Tissue healing
- Return to preinjury state?
Psychological Readiness
- Wants to return
- Any fear of re-injury?
Performance Readiness
- Required fitness
- Skill acquisition
