WEEK #13 Flashcards
(31 cards)
who is Dr. Anita Christis ?
- Masters of Kinesiology (MKin), Graduate Chair, Kinesiology
- talked abut the master in kinesiology program at western university
who is Dr. Georgia Teare ?
- professour at western
- Sport Management (research based)
Research based 2 year program - “What do you want to do after your masters”
Based on your interest you come up with a problem and you will develop your answer and solution based off your study - Focus on sports and sporting events
how many reasons for optimism are there for kinesiology ?
3
what are the 3 reasons for optimism ?
1) evolution
2) Legislative changes/health care, community/ societal and understanding/ appreciation
3) Attracting the best and brightest
what are the three subcategories under #1 evolution and development of kinesiology ?
- Prevention
- Management
- Performance
talk about #2 : Legislative changes/health care, community/societal and understanding/ appreciation …
Kinesiology is the science of human movement, applying the latest evidenced- based research to improve function, health and wellness of people in all settings and populations.
Kinesiologists work with individuals, groups, families, caregivers and healthcare professionals to apply the principles of biomechanics, anatomy, physiology and psychomotor behaviour to improve health, function and performance.
Kinesiologists are committed to enhancing quality of life through the promotion of physical activity and workplace health and safety, the prevention and management of injury and chronic disease, and the overall improvement of health and performance
discuss “Attracting the best and brightest” :
- Western - approx. 3,000 applications for 325 positions
- Incoming average 85.5% (up from 82.0% in 2006-7; up from $500 and a pulse in 1976
what are two reasons for concern ?
1) overexpansion - killing the golden goose ?
2) opportunistic behaviour - squeezing in (squeezing in - educational institutions/profession)
describe “overexpansion - killing the golden goose” :
- is a phrase used to describe a situation where a business or organization grows too quickly or expands too much,
- University pressures to expand enrolments
- Popularity and success in attracting best and brightest students may be our worst enemy
- PSE recruiting enrollments - blood sport
describe “opportunistic behaviour - squeezing in (squeezing in - educational institutions/profession)” :
- refers to actions taken by individuals or organizations to take advantage of situations for personal gain, often in a way that may not be entirely ethical or fair.
In the context of “squeezing in” within educational institutions or professions, it means trying to find ways to gain access to opportunities or resources by exploiting gaps or weaknesses in the system, often in a way that might be seen as unfair or taking advantage of loopholes.
- “Exercise as medicine” - good and bad
- Kinesiology = enrolments, therefore faculties edging in. colleges? And …
- PT and Kinesiology
Turf issues abound
what are the Implications of : Opportunities abound - will we seize them ?
- Centrality and importance of health/health care to canadians
- Demographic realities and implications
- Longevity issues
- Lifestyle issues
who is Jeffrey Simpson ?
is a prominent Canadian journalist, author, and commentator. He is best known for his work as a national affairs columnist for The Globe and Mail, one of Canada’s leading newspapers. Over the course of his career, Simpson has earned a reputation for his insightful analysis of political, economic, and social issues in Canada.
what did we learn about Jeffrey Simpson in class ?
- chronic condition (2012)
- Must change paradigm
- Current system broke and unsustainable
what is the econimic argument in regards to future opportunities in kinesiology ?
- Aging population and fewer taxpayers
- In canada - 11.7% of national income spend on health care
- Without change - will be 18.7% in 20 years due to aging (increased consumption; fewer taxpayers) and inflation
who is david foot ?
is a distinguished Canadian economist and demographer best known for his research on population trends, particularly the impact of the baby boomer generation on Canadian society. Throughout his career, Foot has been an influential voice on policy issues related to aging populations, social welfare, and economics.
who studied “Demographics the study of human population “ ?
david foot
in the “beaty of demographics” what are the three factors we look at ?
1) Ease of measurement
2) Predictability of aging
3) Stability of needs/behaviour within each
what do we mean by “Predictability of behaviour” ?
ex. Who’s more likely to drive a minivan ? an 18 year old or a mother of 3 kids ?
what do we mean by “Stability of needs” ?
Wear and tear of older adults as our population is aging
- Cost more in regards to the % of tax payers (tax payers numbers are shrinking)
- Cost more to look after our senior population
- Our older/elderly population is growing and living for much longer
According to obesity in canada (2013) :
- Since 1981 - obesity rates in canada have double for most age groups
- 31.5% of 5-17 year olds are obese or overweight
While ontario better than some other provinces and territories - the percentage increase in ontario is higher - Economic costs due to chronic diseases linked to obesity is rising - 4.6 billion in 2008 (up 20% since 2001) - estimated at $7.1 billion today
what are the Solutions to all these issues ????
———- > KINESIOLOGY
- Turn up the volume – Assume our rightful place as leaders
- Kinesiology – leadership role in research and program delivery in health, health promotion, intervention, rehabilitation
- Sustained lobby efforts – advocacy campaign, work with government and policy makers – engage Mike Evans – efficacy and economic arguments
