- articulating facets and processes (superior and inferior)
epidermis
outermost layer
dermis
layer of living tissue
hypodermis
under the dermis. for fat storage.
stratum corneum
outermost layer of the skin
stratum basale
single layer of columnar cells. deepest layer of five layers of epidermis.

in dermis. simple tubular structure.
pacinian/lamellar corpuscle
onion shaped structure. built around nerve endings.
adipose tissue
composed of adipocytes. stores energy and insulates the body.
sweat gland
exocrine gland. produces substances in epithelial surface.
sweat gland duct
extends through the dermis to the surface of the skin
meissner’s corpuscle
sensitive to light touch.
hair
protein filament. grow from dermis. mammals are the only ones with hair.
hair follicle (resting)
part of skin. grows hair by packing old cells together.
nerve (cross section)
connects nervous system to other ones.
sebaceous gland
