Week 3 Flashcards
(13 cards)
What is cognition?
Cognition includes various processes like thinking, remembering, learning, and decision-making.
It can be categorized into experiential and reflective modes.
What is cognitive biases
A cognitive bias is a systematic error in thinking that occurs when people process and interpret information in their surroundings, influencing their decisions and judgments
What is congnitive load theory
Cognitive load refers to the amount of information our working memory can process at any given time
What are the design implications
Attention
Perception
Memory
Learning
Reading, Speaking and Listening

What are mental modes
Mental models are internal representations of how things work in the world, helping people make predictions and inferences
What are examples of mental modes in use?
- Thermostat Scenario: People might set a thermostat to its highest setting, believing it will heat a room faster, but thermostats maintain a constant temperature and don’t speed up heating by setting them higher.
- Oven Scenario: People might set an oven to a higher temperature to heat it faster, but ovens heat at a constant rate, and a higher setting might just burn the food.
What are common problems with mental modes?
Many people have incomplete or incorrect understanding of how technologies work, which can lead to difficulty in solving problems and explaining issues.
How can you improve mental modes?
*Provide clear instructions and easy-to-follow guides.
- Offer online help, video tutorials, and context-sensitive assistance.
*Include background information about how things work.
*Design interfaces with clear affordances and appropriate metaphors to aid understanding.
What is the gulf of extinction and evaluation?
*Gulf of Execution: The gap between the user and the physical system.
*Gulf of Evaluation: The gap between the physical system and the user
