Define intelligence
A general cognitive ability related to solving problems efficiently and effectively, to learning from experience, and adapting to the environment
What is the function of intelligence?
Human intelligence evolved as means of solving ecological problems, surviving and reproducing in large and complex social groups
Who introduced the Binet-Simon Scale in 1905?
Alfred Binet and Theodore Simon
Why did Binet and Simon introduce the scale?
For the French government’s need to identify children who needed special education
What happened to the scale in 1916?
Lewis Terman published a revised version
What did the revised version become universally known as?
The Stanford-Binet test
Has the revised version been left as is?
No, there have been many revisions
How is the IQ test calculated?
Mental age divided by chronological age x 100, which was then replaced by deviation IQ in the 3rd edition: test score divided by the median score for people in the same age group x 100
Who proposed the two-factor theory of intelligence?
Charles Spearman in 1904
Describe the two-factor theory of intelligence
Intelligence comprises a general ability known as “g” (general intelligence) and specific factors known as “s” (specific factors of intelligence)
Who proposed the CHC model of cognitive abilities?
Raymond Cattell (1951)
What is the CHC model of cognitive abilities?
The revision of Spearman’s g and proposed separation between fluid IQ and crystallised IQ
What is fluid IQ?
Novel problem solving using reasoning (Gf)
What is crystallised IQ?
Ability based on knowledge, education and experience (Gc)
What happened in 1966 to the CHC model?
-John Horn argues that Gf and Gc were only two factors among several
-the theory continued to be called GfGc theory
What were the other factors proposed by Horn?
-visual perception or processing
-short term memory
-long term storage and retrieval
-speed of processing
-auditory processing ability
-reaction time and decision speed
-quantitative
-broad reading and writing
What happened to the CHC model in 1993?
John Carroll proposed three new levels of
What were the three new levels proposed by Carroll (1993)?
-many narrow specialised abilities (e.g. spelling)
-broad abilities (8-levels)
-and g
What is included in fluid intelligence?
-general sequential reasoning
-induction

-speed of reasoning
What is included in crystallised intelligence?
-language development

-listening ability
-phonetic coding
What is included in general learning and memory?
-memory span
-associative memory
-free recall memory
-meaningful memory
What is included in broad visual perception?
-visualisation
-spatial relations
-closure speed
-perceptual speed
What is included in broad auditory perception?
-speech and sound discrimination
