week 6 Flashcards
(21 cards)
Life history Theory
a scientific framework that studies how organisms allocate energy to grow, reproduce, and maintain themselves.
What are the human mate preferences found by Buss and his colleagues?
Women prefer mates with financial resources, social status, and ambition.
Men prefer younger mates with physical attractiveness as a sign of fertility.
rk selection
how species reproduce in different environments.
r-selected species
reproduce rapidly with little parental care.
K-selected species
reproduce slowly with high parental investment (e.g., humans).
What was RK Selection replaced with
Pace of Life Syndrome
Pace of Life Syndrome
how species evolve different traits (growth, risk-taking, lifespan) in different environments.
Father Absence Effect
Growing up without a father can affect social development.
Father Absence Effect:
Boys
more rebellious, aggressive, sexually exploitive views of women
Best of a bad job
This concept suggests that when faced with difficult or suboptimal conditions (like growing up without a father), individuals adapt by developing behaviors that help them survive or succeed in that environment.
Adaptive phenotypic programming
the process by which organisms change their phenotype to respond to environmental changes
Adaptive Explanations for Play
Burghardt categories
Primary process play
Just for fun! No clear purpose, uses extra energy.
Secondary process play
Helps develop physical skills and motor control.
Tertiary process play
May help brain development, encourage creativity, and improve social skills.
Attachment theory
John Bowlby
explains how infants form emotional bonds with their caregivers
At which age is attahcment formed
formed early in life, 6 mo – 3 years
Mary Ainsworth
developed strange situation test to measure attachment type
Secure Attachment
The child feels safe and comfortable with their caregiver. They get upset when the caregiver leaves but are happy and easily comforted when they return.
Insecure Avoidant
The child seems indifferent to the caregiver leaving or returning. They don’t seek comfort when upset and may avoid the caregiver.
Insecure Resistant (Anxious):
The child gets very upset when the caregiver leaves and may have difficulty calming down when they return. They may want comfort but also resist it.
Group Socialization Theory
Judith Harris
proposes that after genes, next largest factor is peer group, not family
