Week 6 Flashcards
I can amplify DNA using polymerase chain reaction technique and run it through a gel electrophoresis rig. I can interpret a gel run to estimate the size of DNA fragments and determine the relatedness of individuals' samples. I can explore the ethical considerations of a bioethical issue. (5 cards)
What is PCR?
PCR (polymerase chain reaction) is a technique that allows molecular biologists to make many copies of a particular sequence of DNA.
What is gel electrophoresis?
Gel electrophoresis is the separation of nucleic acids or proteins, on the basis of their size and electrical charge, by measuring their rate of movement through an electrical field in a gel.
What are Single Tandem Repeats (STRs)?
STRs are short sequences of DNA, normally of length 2-5 base pairs, that are repeated numerous times, with the number of repeats varying among individuals.
What is DNA profiling?
DNA profiling is the process of analysing DNA variations, for the purpose of identification of an individual.
What is a DNA profile?
A DNA profile measures the number of short tandem repeats (STRs) at specific regions of DNA that are unique to an individual.
