Week 8 - Auditory + Somatosenses Flashcards
(33 cards)
What is sound?
Changes in air pressure caused by vibrations.
What are the physical and perceptual dimensions of sound?
Amplitude (loudness), frequency (pitch), and location (spatial perception).
What is the function of the pinna?
Funnel sound into the auditory canal.
What is impedance matching?
Middle ear increases pressure from tympanic membrane to oval window.
What is the middle ear reflex?
Muscles contract to protect from loud or self-generated sounds.
What are the three canals of the cochlea?
Scala vestibula, scala media, scala tympani.
What does the Organ of Corti contain?
3500 inner and 12000 outer hair cells on the basilar membrane.
What is the function of hair cells?
Convert vibrations into electrical signals.
What is tonotopic organisation?
Nerve fibres correspond to specific frequencies.
What are the three auditory cortex regions?
Core (A1), belt, and parabelt.
What is the ventral stream responsible for?
Sound identification – the ‘what’ pathway.
What is the dorsal stream responsible for?
Sound location – the ‘where’ pathway.
How is loudness perceived?
By the rate of neuron firing.
How is pitch perceived?
By place coding and temporal (rate) coding.
What are the components of the vestibular system?
Vestibular sacs and semicircular canals.
What do vestibular sacs detect?
Gravity and head orientation.
What do semicircular canals detect?
Angular acceleration in three planes.
What functions does the vestibular system support?
Balance, head position, and eye movement stability.
What does the somatosensory system detect?
Touch, temperature, pain, body position, visceral sensations.
What are the three types of skin layers?
Epidermis, dermis, subcutaneous tissue.
What are mechanoreceptors?
Touch receptors responding to pressure/vibration.
What fibres do mechanoreceptors use?
Large myelinated Aβ fibres.
What are thermoreceptors?
Free nerve endings detecting temperature.
What fibres carry temperature information?
Warm: unmyelinated C fibres; Cold: Aδ and C fibres.
