Week 9 Flashcards
(33 cards)
What are the bones of the hand from distal to proximal?
Distal phalanges, middle phalanges, proximal phalanges, metacarpals, distal carpal row, proximal carpal row.
How many carpal bones are in the wrist?
8 carpal bones.
What are the joints of the hand from fingertip to wrist?
Distal interphalangeal (DIP), proximal interphalangeal (PIP), metacarpophalangeal (MCP), carpometacarpal (CMC), midcarpal, radiocarpal.
Where is the 1st carpometacarpal joint located?
Between the trapezium and the base of the 1st metacarpal (thumb).
What ligaments stabilize the MCP and IP joints?
Collateral ligaments and volar plates.
When are the MCP collateral ligaments taut?
In MCP flexion.
When are the IP collateral ligaments taut?
In MCP extension.
What are the two main arterial arches in the hand?
Superficial and deep palmar arches.
Which arteries contribute to the hand’s blood supply?
Radial and ulnar arteries.
What part of the hand does the radial nerve supply?
Skin over the dorsoradial aspect; no intrinsic muscles.
What part of the hand does the median nerve supply?
Palmar radial side, thenar muscles, lateral 2 lumbricals.
What part of the hand does the ulnar nerve supply?
Palmar ulnar side, hypothenar and most intrinsic muscles.
Which nerve passes through the carpal tunnel?
Median nerve.
Where do extrinsic hand muscles originate?
In the forearm.
What muscle inserts on the middle phalanx?
Flexor digitorum superficialis (FDS).
What muscle inserts on the distal phalanx?
Flexor digitorum profundus (FDP).
What structure holds the flexor tendons to bone?
Annular and cruciate ligaments.
What are the three main thenar muscles?
Opponens pollicis, abductor pollicis brevis, flexor pollicis brevis.
What is the function of opponens pollicis?
Opposes the thumb.
What nerve supplies the thenar muscles?
Median nerve (except deep head of flexor pollicis brevis, which may be ulnar).
What are the three hypothenar muscles?
Abductor digiti minimi, flexor digiti minimi, opponens digiti minimi.
What is the nerve supply to hypothenar muscles?
Ulnar nerve.
What is the function of dorsal and palmar interossei?
Dorsal abduct (DAB), palmar adduct (PAD) the fingers.
What nerve innervates the interossei?
Ulnar nerve.
