Week Two Part 2 Earthquake Flashcards
(13 cards)
Dip slip faults-
Normal faults: ______________
(younger rocks on top of older rocks)
Reverse(Thrust) faults: Compression
Extensions
Seismometer- device that measures earthquakes
seismograph- device that record earthquakes
seismogram- actual recording of an earthquake, either on paper or digitally
seismologist- a person who studies earthquakes
Earthquake scales- Modified Mercalli, Richter, Moment Magnitude
8 silicate minerals:
Olivier
Proxene
Amphibians
Micas-Biotite
Micas-Muscovite
Feldspars-Potassium
Feldspar-Plagioclase
Quartz
(Over Pluto a marvelous butterfly moved millions feet plus flew peacefully & quitely
Plagioclase feldspars make up 39%of crust
Potassium feldspars make up 12% of crust
Igneous rocks- formed from molten materials (magma when it’s inside the Earth & Lava when it’s at Earth surface
2 main factors determine the type of igneous rock produced by molten material-
-Cooling rate- fast, slow or a combination of both. This controls texture
-Composition- what chemics are in the magma determines what minerals are the building blocks of rocks.
Obsidian- rocks with a glassy texture
Ground mass- refers to part of rocks where crystals are not visible
Pegmatitic texture- all large crystals
Volcanic Breccia- made of pieces of volcanic rock larger than 2 millimeters in size
Tuff- made of volcanic ask less than 2 millimeters in size
Compositional terms:
Felicia(Feldspar & silica)
Intermediate
Magic
Ultramafic
Dominant mineral/Granitic- Quartz
Dominant/Andesitic- Amphibole
Dominant/Basaltic- Pyroxene
Dominant/Ultramafic- Olivine
