my study for
kinship studies /// mdd & genetics
aim
investigating the potential genetic nature of mdd
participants
161 grandchildren + their parents + their grandparents (generational longitude family study)
procedure
generational
longitude family study (investigates the prevalence of a certain behaviour over generations)
1) the og sample (now grandparents) was selected from an OUTPATIENT clinic, specialising in the treatment of mood disorders + additional control group coming from the same local area
2) the reaserchers interviewd both the patients as well as their children 4 times
3) 20 years later when the children of the patients had their own children the 2nd part of the study took place, during which
clinicians blind to all the prvious procedures, interviews and diagnises conducted interviews with the chidren
THE REASERCH USED TRIANGULATION WHICH MEANT THERE WERE 2 CLINICIANS A PSYCHIATRIST AND A PSYCHOLOGIST
i they had an inter rater reliability of 0.82 for MDD
results
- children who had grandparents AND parents with depression (meaning 2 generations) were much more likely to be depressed, higher rates of depressed grandchildren came from 2 generations of depression
- moreover, the severity of the parent’s depression was correlated with an increased rate of mood disorders in children
- nonetheless, if only the parent struggled with depression and the grandparent did not byly szanse ze the kid is fine
evaluation
- triangulation so high reliability and credibility
- large number of participants but they SHOULD carry out specific reaserch
- no genotype specified
-
longitude study
observing the same variable over a loooong period of time
family studies
incidence of a behaviour over a number of generations
