What is bipolar disorder? (Simply)
- A mood affective disorder
What is Bipolar disorder?
A mood affective disorder characterized by extreme mood swings that include emotional highs (mania or hypomania) and lows (depression). These mood shifts can affect sleep, energy, behavior, judgment.
There are 2 types of bipolar disorder. What are they?
- Type 1 (involves severe manic episodes)
- Type 2 (involves less severe hypomanic episodes)
What are manic episodes?
An intense state of elevated mood and energy or irritability. Lasting 7 days and may require hospitalization due to severity.
Name some symptoms of mania?
Behaviorual: Impulsivity, decreased need for sleep.
Cognitive: Racing thoughts, grandiosity, distractibility
Emotional- elevated mood or irritability.
What is a hypomanic episode?
Milder form of mania. Characterized by increased euphoria, energy, productivity. However, the individual may be able to still function, Lasts 4 days.

What is type 1 bipolar?
Characterised by mixed and manic episodes or symptoms that can cause sig problems in daily life or require hospitalisation needed. Depressive episodes also occur.
What is type 2 bipolar?
Characterized by a pattern of depressive episodes and hypomanic episodes.
Hypomania is less severe than mania, but still involves ** increased euphoria, energy and productivity**.
Bipolar II is often misdiagnosed because the symptoms of hypomania can be subtle.
Define mood affective disorder
Mental health conditions characterized by marked disruptions in emotions, such as severe lows (depression) or severe highs (hypomania/ mania)
ICD critera for bipolar?
- Bipolar 1= occurence of at least 1 manic or mixed episode.
- Bipolar 2= occurence of at least 1 hypomanic and major depressive episode.
- The episodes cannot be explained by other disorders (schizophrenia/schizoaffective disorders).
- Cause sig distress in important areas of functioning.
