What Is Life? Lesson Flashcards
(4 cards)
What are the four needs of living things?
The four needs are:
- food- energy source
- water
- living space
- homeostasis- stable internal conditions
What is the difference between an autotroph and a heterotroph? Give an example of each
An autotroph is an organism that makes his own food (some capture energy from the sun and use it to make food). A heterotroph is an organism that cannot make his own food and must live by feeding on other organisms.
An example of an autotroph: all plants.
An example of a heterotroph: all humans and animals.
What is the difference between a sexual and asexual reproduction?
Asexual reproduction is a reproduction that involves only one parent who produces offspring that are similar to him. Sexual reproduction is a reproduction that involves two parents that produce offsprings that are not similar to either parent.
What are the 6 characteristics of living things?
The 6 characteristics of Living organisms are:
Cellular organization- Must be made up of one or more cells. Can be unicellular or multicellular.
The chemicals of life- Must contain genetic material.
Energy use- Must be able to take in and break down materials to get & use energy.
Response to surroundings- Must be able to respond to stimuli in their environment.
Growth and development- Must be able to grow and develop.
Reproduction- Must be able to reproduce, or produce offsprings that are similar to the parents.
