White Blood Cells Flashcards
(33 cards)
What is the range for leukocyte?
4,800/mm3 - 10,800/mm3
What is the difference between WBC and RBC?
RBC are only in the bloodstream and carry out their function to the blood
WBC are able to slip out of capillary vessels (diapedesis)
What are the 5 most to least abundent WBC?
Neutrophils, Lympocytes, Monocytes, Eosinophils and Basophils
What are the 3 formed elements?
RBC, WBC and platelets
WBC pneumonic:
Never let monekeys eat bananas
What are the 2 agranular WBCs?
Lymphocytes and monocytes
What are the 3 granulocyte WBCs?
Neutrophils, eosinophils and basophils
What do neutrophils do?
Help kill bad bacteria
Bands on neutrophils:
Segs on neutrophils:
Immature cells
Mature cells
More bands on neutrophils = _____ shift
left
What do eosinophils do?
Protect the body from parasite Worms, allergies (Wheezing) and any Weird things you don’t normally see
What do basophils do?
Reduce inflammation
Lymphocytes have 2 different types:
B lymphocytes
T lymphocytes
What do lymphocytes do?
Fight viral and bacterial infections
What do B lymphocytes do?
Produce antibodies that can attach to and destroy invading viruses or bacteria
What do T lymphocytes do?
Work with the immune system to act directly against virus-infected cells and tumor cells
What do monocytes do?
Destroy germs (viruses, bacteria, fungi and protozoa) and eliminate infected cells
They are a macrophage
What do neutrophils look like?
Granules, multilobed nucleus, purple/blue
What do eosinophils look like?
Granules, bilobed nucleus, red
What do basophils look like?
Granules, bilobed nucleus, purpleish/dark blue
What do lymphocytes look like?
Almost all of the nucleus fills the cell, pale blue 9smaller than monocyte)
What do monocytes look like?
Almost all of the nucleus fills the cell, kidney-shaped nucleus, gray-blue
What are interleukins?
A group of proteins produced by white blood cells and other cells in the body that regulate immune responses
What are colony stimulating factors?
A group of glycoproteins that stimulate the production of blood cells, including white blood cells that fight infection
