What does WHO stand for?
World health organisation
When was WHO founded?
1948, by the UN, post WW2
What are the positives of WHO?
Works with NGOs (charities), helps language barrier (interpreters), train up new medics, research diseases and shares information, provides vaccines for 26 disease (COVID-19), prevents 3 million deaths per year, many countries are UN members they can challenge TNC’s, helps UN meet sustainable development goals - 17 targets to help countries develop by 2030 such as number 1 no poverty, helps coordinate global health efforts (eg, vaccines)
What are the negatives of the WHO?
UN is not a world governing - has an advisory role, can only help countries cooperate, nor have authority over them, sponsored by some TNCs - hypocritical as they could influence decisions eg. Coke, religious and cultural barriers, relies on funding from countries, had its budget cut by 20% to tackle chronic disease
