What is the definition of “wider determinants of health”?
A social, economic and environmental factor that influence a persons health and wellbeing beyond their access to healthcare services. Can also be known as social determinant of health and include things like education, employment, housing and income.
What is meant by social capital?
The ability of people to work together effectively to achieve a common goal or purpose (Good or bad community)
What is an example of wider determinants of health?
- Built and natural environment

What is meant by natural and built environment?
Natural: Access to green/ blue spaces (parks and lakes)
Built: Man made infrastructure around you, such as housing and transportation.
Explain the social gradient of health
The relationship between the wider determinants of health and health outcomes. It shows that those with lower socio-economic status tend to have poorer health outcomes.
What is the definition of health inequality?
Unfair differences in health outcomes caused by the wider determinants of health
What is an example of health inequality?
- Women in the UK have a lower survival rate for out of hospital cardiac arrests.
- Black women are more likely to die than white women in pregnancy/ childbirth in the UK due to wider determinants in health.
Who is more likely to be impacted by health inequalities and why?
(At least state 1)
•Those with protected characteristics- unconscious bias and lack of representation in research.
• Socioeconomically deprived- poor education leading to more labour intensive jobs being unable to take time off to seek medical access.
• Vulnerable/ socially excluded groups (sex workers and gypsies)- unconscious bias and more likely to partake in behavioural risks to health.
Geography (farmers)- inner city workers more exposed to air pollution and crime: this who live finally at a greater distance from health facilities.
What was marmots aim?
To decrease the social gradient and improve health outcomes.
What is the Marmot Review?
Identifies and aims to reduce health inequalities by addressing the impact of wider determinants to health across the lifespan.
What is an example of Marmots recommendations?
•Give every child the best start in life.
•Fair employment.
•Healthy standard of living.
•Health places and communities.
•Prevention of ill health
Why is 1001 critical days important according to Marmot 2020?
To ensure children have the best start in life and reduce negative health outcomes in the future due to wider determinants of health.
