Wk.10 L1 - Resistance exercise Flashcards
(10 cards)
1
Q
LO
A
- Describe how resistance exercise can affect bone and muscle health of hormone-deprived people
- Explain the benefit of resistance exercise in people with osteoarthritis
2
Q
Resistance exercises
A
strength training using weights/resistance bands to overload muscles with the intention of improving strength and endurance
3
Q
Muscle adaptation
A
- Mechanical loading can lead to muscle damage
- This leads to muscle repair and remodeling, adapting the muscle to handle future stress
4
Q
Bone adaptation
A
- Loading leads to bone adaptation
through cellular mechanotransduction - Bone tissues deform, triggering osteocytes to respond to the strain, by starting anabolic processes
- Loading reduces sclerostin production by osteocytes, promoting bone formation.
5
Q
Quantifying resistance exercise
A
- Monitoring training loads is important to ensure the training achieves its aims
- Measured using exercise volume (reps) and intensity (1rep max)
- Intensity is also related to repetition, and duration rest recovery periods between sets
6
Q
Training Plan
A
Once muscles adapt to an exercise program they stop progressing
Progressive overload:
- needed to gain muscular benefits
7
Q
Muscle adaptation and aging
A
Aging does NOT effect muscle gain from resistance training
8
Q
Postmenopausal women
A
- Resistance exercise improves muscle size and strength
- Preserves bone mineral density
9
Q
Androgen-deprived men
A
- Improves muscle size and strength
- Alone resistance trainign cannot preserve BMD, but can with impact exercise
10
Q
Resistance exercise and osteoarthritis
A
- reduces pain and stiffness in osteoarthritis patients
- Improves physical function
