Q

a splint used in farm animals to keep the bones at the fracture site in close contact by allowing the patient to bear all its body weight on the ring applied to the axial or inguinal area

A

Thomas Splint

19

Q

PROCEDURE - Applying a Cast

A
  1. Vet applies 2 layers of 3” plaster material > leave 1 cm ortho felt exposed at top
  2. Hold fiberglass material in bucket of clean water > until thoroughly wet > shake excess water
  3. Apply cast material > overlap by 1/3-1/2 its width > work toward foot > cut traction wires + assistant support leg
  4. Apply 4-6 layers of 4-5” fiberglass tape > apply more pressure in these layers > laminates better + makes cast stronger
  5. Cut excess stockinette > leave 4 cm > turn down 4 cm over the ends of the cast
  6. Place wedge block under the heel > allows horse to walk easier with cast
  7. Incorporate excess stockinette + wedge block into last layers
  8. Cap the bottom of the cast with hard acrylic
  9. Place elastic adhesive tape around top of the cast > attach to skin
22
Q

The skin is powdered with ____ or ____ to keep the area under the cast dry

A

talcum or boric acid

23
Q

PROCEDURE - Applying a Lower Limb Support Bandage

A
  1. Apply the padded layer > secure with rolled conforming gauze > compress padding to limb
  2. Apply outer shell > elastic wrap, adhesive elastic tape, flannel track wrap
  • If using Ace bandage or track wrap > secure with white tape in “barber pole” fashion
24
Q

PROCEDURE - Applying a Lower Limb Wound Bandage

A
  1. Clean wound > apply topical antimicrobial
  2. Apply nonadherent dressing directly over the wound
  3. Secure with rolled conforming gauze > wrap gauze around the limb with light pressure, overlapping, without wrinkles > 2-4 cm proximal + distal to wound edges
  4. Apply the padded layer > secure with rolled conforming gauze > compress padding to limb
  5. Apply outer shell > secure top + bottom of bandage with Elastikon to skin
