16
Q

What does Water control?

A

Water controls fire (extinguishes)

17
Q

What does Wood control?

A

Wood controls earth (tree roots break up the earth)

18
Q

What does fire control?

A

Fire controls metal

19
Q

What does Earth control?

A

Earth controls water (its flow via a dam)

20
Q

What happens if wood overacts on earth?

A

o Wood overacting on Earth = Liver qi stasis and spleen qi deficiency. Poor appetite, irritability, alternating constipation / diarrhoea or liver invading the stomach – irritability, pain in the epigastrium, reflex, nausea or vomiting.

21
Q

What happens if Earth overacts on Water?

A

damp from the spleen impacts on kidney function – oedema, difficult urination, yellow face.

22
Q

What happens if water overacts on fire?

A

kidney yang deficiency with water overflowing to the heart – oedema of the ankles, feeling cold, backache, puffy face, palpitations.

23
Q

What happens if Fire overacts on metal?

A

o Fire over-acting on metal – full heat in the lungs – painful cough with yellow sputum, red face, feeling of heat

24
Q

What happens if metal overacts on wood?

A

lung qi fails to descend and impedes flow of liver wi – fatigue, irritability, cough, tight diaphragm, white face.

25
What is the insulting sequence?
The controlling sequence in reverse. The qi from the element that should be controlled insults or attacks the element that should be controlling it.
26
What does fire consume?
o Fire consumes the water
27
What does earth insult?
o Earth insults wood
28
What does metal inhibit?
o Metal inhibits fire
29
What does Water do to earth?
o Water turns the earth into mud
30
What does wood overcome?
o Wood overcomes metal
31
What happens if wood insults metal?
Liver qi stasis (often with fire), invading the lungs – strong cough that is worse with stress and is hard to control, distention of the chest and epigastrium, asthma
32
What happens if metal insults fire?
Lung and heart qi deficiency – palpitations, insomnia and breathlessness or lung heat affecting the heart – cough, palpitations, chest oppression.
33
What happens if Fire insults water?
kidney yin deficiency with heart heat (the fire has consumed the water) or heart and kidney not communicating – anxiety, insomnia, night sweats, dry mouth, dizziness and malar flush.
34
What happens if water insults earth?
spleen and kidney yang deficiency – loose stools, oedema, fatigue and weak limbs
35
What happens if Earth insults wood?
Dampness from spleen stagnates and transforms to damp heat which impacts on the movement of qi in the liver and bile in the gallbladder – jaundice, hypochondriac pain and distension, hepaitis
